Xochitl Torres Small has been appointed as the new Deputy Secretary of the government body, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Pet Food Institute (PFI) expressed their congratulations on her appointment, highlighting her strong commitment to rural communities, which makes her highly qualified for the prestigious position within the agency. PFI is enthusiastic about collaborating with her on USDA programs to advance the interests of the pet food industry, as mentioned by Dana Brooks, President and CEO at PFI.
Similarly, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) welcomed the appointment of Torres Small, emphasizing her significant role in enhancing the US agriculture system. Although the USDA does not directly regulate the pet industry, the AFIA believes that her influence will be felt indirectly, which is beneficial for the pet food sector.
Prior to this new role, Torres Small held the position of Under Secretary for Rural Development at the USDA starting from October 2021. Her extensive background also includes serving as a US representative and being actively involved in various committees like the House Agriculture Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee.
